VW Split Screen Van Restoration Case Study

VW Split Screen Van Restoration at MAD Workshop In BristolThis 1965 VW T2 Split Screen van came into MAD Workshop needing a full restoration.

After a thorough inspection and lengthy discussion with the owners the schedule of work for the restoration was agreed. As with many vintage buses that have lived in the British climate the polished exterior hid extensive corrosion in the main structure of the van. We discovered significant corrosion to both front arches, all four jacking points, the rear arches, main subframe and cross members.

The only proper approach when dealing with a restoration of this type is to make sure all corrosion is removed. As you can see from the photographs that's exactly what we did ! The owners sourced many of the repair panels, choosing to use original VW panels where they were available. Each section of the body and frame was prepped and proofed to ensure corrosion does not return.

A complete new front clip, front arches and doglegs, both sills, loading door bottoms, rear quarters, rear arch innners and outers were all replaced along with the complete long side panel !

As you can see this really has been a FULL restoration but this van should still be alive and on the road in another fourty years!
